Adding Scents to Your Decor

Smell, is one of the most powerful links to emotions and feelings, so why not include it in your home decor? The power of scent can create different feelings and moods for each room, so picking a scent is just as important as picking a piece of furniture.

Have you ever walked into a room and remembered a memory or felt a sense of nostalgia? A scent can trigger an emotion, bring up a memory, or remind you of someone. This is one of the many ways you can also make your house a home — by creating memories.

When choosing a scent, you should consider the space, the current mood, and the visual aspect of the room. Avoid choosing a scent that will overpower the entire room, but also beware of scents that you won’t be able to smell at all.

Here are some suggestions on different types of scents for each area of your home:

Kitchens

Fresh and clean scents —energizing

Example: zesty lemon

Bedrooms

Warm scents — relaxing

Example: lavender

Bathrooms

Fresh/ Heavy floral scents —refreshing

Example: mandarin

Living Rooms

Clean/ earthy scents —socializing

Example: thyme

Also be conscious of how you incorporate your scents; strategically place them to enhance the scent but also use this as an opportunity to add a little something extra to your decor. Candles add an ambiance, wax melters have some great design options that are perfect to accent your decor, and incenses create a tranquil atmosphere with the smoke (use in well-ventilated areas). There are endless possibilities when it comes to incorporating a scent in your design.
