Space is one of the most important elements. There are two types of space: negative space and positive space. Negative space is empty space and creates a lofty and open feel. Positive space is filled with decor. Finding a balance between the two is key and different for every home.
Lines shape how our brains perceive space. Horizontal lines make the space feel wider while vertical lines make the space feel lofty and airy. To make a more tranquil and peaceful feeling use horizontal lines. To subconsciously draw attention upward use vertical lines. Avoid using too many lines because this can make your space feel dull and confined.
Forms are shapes formed from lines. Geometric shapes are angular and natural shapes are curved. Mix and match forms to make it feel earthy, modern, warm, cool or whatever you’d like.
Light can set the mood for any room. Natural light is warm and happy and can show off your paint color or certain furniture. Artificial lighting is great for indicating a focal point like art pieces and sculptures and mood lighting.
Colors express different feelings, messages, and moods. It is important to understand the different feelings colors inspire and how you il use them in your home.
Textures are how something feels but also how something looks. Silk and linen are textures you can feel however a stone wallpaper gives the illusion of a textured stone wall. Both can be incorporated in your design to achieve a desired look.
